In a high-volume production line, a lamp bursting is more than just a annoying bit of downtime. It’s a nightmare. When a quartz tube goes, you’ve got glass shards and halogen gas raining down right onto your wafers. That’s an instant batch killer. And the cleanup? A full chamber scrub is the last thing anyone wants to deal with on a Tuesday. We build our infrared heaters to make sure that doesn’t happen. Dealing with Thermal Stress
Most of these tubes fail because of “hot spots” near the electrodes or uneven expansion. It’s basically the glass struggling to keep up with the heat. To fix this, we use high-purity synthetic quartz. It’s tough enough to handle the rapid heating and cooling cycles without cracking. We also use a reinforced envelope design. It helps spread the heat across the tube more evenly, so you don’t get those dangerous pressure points. But here’s the thing: if you’re pushing your lamps to their max wattage, the internal pressure spikes. If you run them at full tilt, your cooling airflow has to be spot on. If the air isn’t moving right, you get localized overheating. That’s usually where the rupture starts.
The “Safety Net”
To keep the mess contained, we don’t just leave the lamp exposed. That’s asking for trouble. Instead, we wrap it in a high-transmittance quartz sleeve or a specialized safety shield. Think of it as a bodyguard for your wafers. If the heating element burns out or the tube finally gives way, the shield catches everything. The debris stays put, and your wafers stay pristine.
Maintenance Without the Headache
We use standardized connectors because a loose fit is a recipe for disaster. Loose connections create arcs, which lead to heat spikes, which lead to… well, you know. A burst lamp. One last piece of advice: don’t wait for the lamp to dim before you swap it out. Set a replacement schedule based on how hard you’re running your equipment. Replacing the tubes before they hit their limit is the only way to actually guarantee you won’t be scrubbing a chamber this month.
