
Infrared vs. Hot Air: Which one actually wins for sensor packaging?
If you’re still relying on forced hot air for semiconductor deep processing, you’re basically paying a “time tax” every single day. Think about how a convection oven works. You heat the air, and then the air heats the part. It’s a middleman system. Infrared (IR) just cuts that guy out. It uses electromagnetic radiation to dump energy directly into the sensor packaging. It’s fast. Really fast. When you’re working with thin films or those finicky specialized adhesives, every second counts. Hot air ovens are sluggish. They have this massive thermal inertia—meaning they take forever to warm up and even longer to stop swinging. With IR lamps, you hit your target temperature in seconds. I’ve seen this play out most in curing and drying. A convection oven might need 20 minutes just to soak a batch. A tuned IR array? It hits that same core temperature in a tiny fraction of the time. And because it’s so efficient, you don’t need a dozen heating stations cluttering up your floor to keep your throughput moving. But look, IR isn’t a magic wand. There are some catches. You have to get the emission spectrum right. If the wavelength doesn’t match what your packaging material can actually absorb, the energy just bounces off like a mirror. Then there’s the “burnt toast” problem. Since IR hits the surface first, it’s easy to scorch the top layer before the center even gets warm. You can’t just set it and forget it. You’ll need a solid PID controller and you’ll have to be obsessive about the distance between the lamps and the part to avoid those nasty hot spots. For anyone moving their lines over to high-volume assembly, IR is usually the way to go. The best part is the zoned heating. You can blast heat onto one specific spot of the sensor while keeping the rest of it cool. You just can’t do that with a hot air box; in a box, everything gets hot. Just a heads-up: make sure your cooling system can handle the spikes. When you ramp down from that kind of intensity, things happen quickly.
