
Don’t Let Your Bathroom Heater Become a Hazard
Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom with high ceilings sounds great until you remember one thing: steam. Bathrooms are basically steam rooms. All that moisture settles on everything. If you just throw a standard heater up there, you’re asking for trouble. You need a setup that’s completely insulated, or you’re risking short circuits and leakage currents that nobody wants to deal with.
Dealing with the Damp
Here’s the thing about water vapor—it finds a way into everything. When moisture hits a live wire, it creates a path for electricity to go where it shouldn’t. To stop that, we use sealed quartz envelopes and heavy-duty insulators at the contact points. The whole point is to keep the heating element totally separate from the outer frame. And please, don’t cheap out on the housing. We use IP-rated casings to keep the steam away from the wiring. If you use a budget housing, moisture will seep into the sockets, cause some nasty arcing, and your lamp will be dead in a few weeks.
Staying Safe (and Grounded)
Safety in a wet room really comes down to how well the insulation holds up. We put our heaters through high-voltage surge tests to make sure there’s zero leakage. Plus, the chassis has to be bonded to a dedicated ground. That way, if something does go wrong, the breaker trips instantly instead of turning your ceiling frame into a live wire. We also make sure no terminals are left exposed. Everything is shrouded. It stops “tracking,” which is just a fancy way of saying that dust and moisture can’t build a bridge between the hot wire and the ground.
The Balancing Act: Heat vs. Sealing
Now, there’s a catch. You can’t just seal everything airtight. While a tight seal keeps the steam out, it also traps the heat inside the fixture. If you seal a high-wattage lamp too tightly without a way for the air to expand, you’ll end up frying your own internal wiring. It’s a bit of a trade-off. You have to balance that IP rating with how the heat actually moves. Make sure your bathroom ventilation is up to the task, otherwise the insulation on your lead wires will just degrade over time.
