Here’s the basic deal: to keep a mirror from fogging up, you just need to keep the glass warmer than the dew point. We use short-wave infrared lamps to do the heavy lifting. Getting the Wattage Right
You can’t just guess the wattage; it has to match the size of the mirror. For those small vanity mirrors—anything under 0.5m²—a little bit of juice does the trick. Usually, 50W to 100W is plenty to keep things clear. But once you move into those big, wall-to-wall bathroom mirrors, you need more heat. Now, here is where a lot of people mess up. They’ll slap one giant, high-power lamp right in the center.Don’t do that. All that does is create a massive hot spot in the middle while the corners stay foggy. The Danger Zone: Heat vs. Glass
Sure, more wattage means the mirror clears up faster. But quartz infrared lamps pack a punch. If you cram a 300W lamp into a tiny housing with no airflow, the heat just builds and builds. Eventually, it starts attacking the silvering on the back of the glass. You’ll start seeing “black spots” or the coating will just peel away. Not a great look. You’ve got to balance the power with the actual mass of the mirror. Toss in a thermostat or a simple timer so the lamp isn’t just blasting heat for hours on end.
The Boring (But Important) Electrical Stuff
When you’re planning the electrical load for the bathroom, keep in mind that these lamps have a specific spike in current when they first kick on. Make sure your wiring can handle that peak. If you’re swapping out an old unit, double-check the socket. Sometimes it’s a simple drop-in replacement, but other times you’ll need to rewire for a different voltage. And one last thing: make sure the housing lets the heat breathe. If it’s too tight, you’ll burn through your lamps way faster than you should.
