
Keeping Your Infrared Heaters Safe in Wet Zones
Let’s be honest: putting infrared lamps in a bathroom or on a damp patio is a bit of a gamble if you don’t do it right. Water and electricity don’t get along. When steam or mist settles on a live heating element, it creates a path for the current to wander where it shouldn’t. If you aren’t 100% insulated, you’re looking at short circuits—or worse.
The battle against “leakage”
Here’s the thing about humidity. It loves to find a way in. Standard quartz tubes seem solid, but if the surface gets dirty or damp, they can actually conduct electricity. To stop this, we lean heavily on specialized sealing gaskets and high-temp insulating sleeves right at the electrode terminals. It stops something called “tracking.” That’s just a fancy way of saying electricity crawling across a moist surface until it hits the metal frame. If your insulation resistance dips too low, your GFCI is going to trip constantly. And nobody wants to be the person who gets a shock just for stepping into a warm room.
Where things usually go wrong
The weakest point is almost always where the wire meets the lamp. It’s the “gap” that kills you. If you just toss in a standard R7s or SK15 socket without a waterproof boot, moisture will literally suck itself into the contact pins. It’s called capillary action, and it’s a silent killer for electronics. We’ve found that using silicone-based potting or IP65-rated enclosures is the way to go. It basically wraps the wiring in a protective cocoon so the water never even gets a chance to touch the circuitry.
The balancing act: Heat vs. Seals
There’s a catch, though. High-wattage lamps get hot. Really hot. That causes the materials to expand and shrink every time you flip the switch. If your waterproof seals are too stiff, that constant movement will just crack them right open. You need a seal that’s tight enough to keep water out, but flexible enough to breathe. One last pro tip:use a drip-loop. Just let the cable dip down and come back up before it hits the junction box. That way, any water running down the wire just drips off onto the floor instead of flowing straight into your electrical connections. Without that simple little loop, even the most expensive lamp is eventually going to fail.
